May 6, 2012 - Graduation Day 2523 viewsIt’s been a big offseason for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. First he graduated from Miami University, and now he has been selected as one of six individuals to be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame later this year.
Roethlisberger, who played at Miami from 2001-03, holds all of the school’s major passing records, including passing for 200 yards or more in all 14 games in 2003, also an NCAA record for most games in a season passing for 200 yards or more and consecutive 200 yards plus passing games.
What makes the induction really special for Roethlisberger is he is going in the same year as his former coach, the late Terry Hoeppner (photo above). Hoeppner, who died of brain cancer in June, 2007, spent 19 seasons at Miami, and was the head coach during Roethlisberger’s time at the school. Miami had a winning season each of Hoeppner’s six years as the school’s head coach (1999-2004).
“That was the biggest thing for me,†said Roethlisberger of being inducted with Hoeppner. “It’s an honor to go into the Hall of Fame, but to go in with Coach Hoeppner kind of made me tear up a bit and gave me goose bumps. To me that means more than going in myself. It will be an emotional day.â€

My daughter's school, here in KC, is celebrating the Chiefs being in the Super Bowl by allowing an ‘Out of Uniform Day’ by wearing your favorite Chiefs player jersey. I like her choice.

Ben during the 2004 NFL Combine1362 viewsFrom Sports Illustrated's slideshow entitled, "Famous Combine, Draft Stories" posted February 20, 2009:
In 2004, Big Ben entered the draft as a junior and did not have the benefit of postseason All Star Games. His draft grade was heavily reliant on the combine and he did not perform well. He was inaccurate with his passes throughout his workout and as a result became the third quarterback chosen in the '04 draft.
From an article on the NFL Combine by SI writer Don Banks the same day:
There are plenty of hesitations within the league when it comes to expecting early results from a highly rated junior quarterback, and the track record of such picks is less than comforting. Yes, Ben Roethlisberger was the exception to the rule in 2004. But for every Big Ben -- and there's only one -- there have been an Alex Smith, a Tim Couch, a Ryan Leaf, a Heath Shuler or an Andre Ware.
